The Gala had been on the calendar each summer for decades, normally taking place in the village's pleasure park sometime in August.

In 2007 the free event did not go ahead, but in 2008, the Gala was back and as strong and vibrant as ever. Back again in 2009, but more traditional, with the Homecoming Scotland 2009 theme, with several traditional Scottish events.

August 15th 2009 saw the start of the day with heavy rain. Correctly forecast for the Friday, with a break before returning on the Saturday morning, but relenting in time to give a generaly sunny and warm day from 11:00 am Saturday onward, right through to the end of the family disco at midnight

    It include–
    • Jacobite Parade from the Learney Hall led by Gala Lass & Lad & Pipe Band fancy dress prizes.
    • The Learney Challenge Hill Race, 12.5k /8 miles up and back from Learney Hill
    • A Clootie Dumpling Competition
    • Deeside Young Heavies - A display of a range Highland Games events
    • Mini Highland Games - Under 4's - Tossing the mini caber, Shot put, wellie boot throwing.
    • Pet Parade - for Waggiest tail, most appealing eyes, best condition, judge wants to take home, show us a trick, fancy dress
    • Tug-o-War - with a mix of ages and genders for mixed teams of 8

This year's gala was opened by long-serving Torphins Primary School head teacher Irene Reid, who is due to retire shortly, who also presented the prizes. Station garage kindly provided the Speaker system and stage.
