Torphins is one of 12 Scotmid stores, the largest independent co-operative in Scotland, which launched a new membership strategy into 12 pilot food stores.

The pilot will allow the Society to test a number of new communication strategies with their members enabling Scotmid to eventually create a membership that is relevant in today 'smarketplace.

Tricia Edington, Membership Development Manager at Scotmid said, " Membership is absolutely key to a co-operative such as Scotmid. It' s one of the reasons why they have a positive difference from many of our rivals.

" The Society is owned and democratically controlled by its members and every member has an opportunity to play their part. "

" However, in an ever-changing world and marketplace we have to ensure that membership is relevant; attractive both to members and future members and we have to know what our members really want from the Society. "

" The importance of membership to the Society is reflected in the creation of a new strategy. Stage one is being rolled out to 12 of our Scotmid and Morning Noon & Night food stores on a pilot basis. "

" Several months from now they will launch stage two of the pilot process into a further 14 stores. "

" The pilot stores will feature a higher visibility membership offering allowing customers the opportunity to find out more about membership and the Society. "

" However, the major difference will be in how we speak to these new members and their present membership. we will be asking them what they want as a member of Scotmid eg more community activity from them; special offers ; more Fairtrade products and so on. This will be done through surveys, newsletters and special membership events. "

" When we have completed the pilot study we will be in a much better position to begin the process of creating a membership that is relevant and worthwhile for our members. "
